Ephemerides in high medieval Europe: The textual evidence

چکیده

A common aspect of the practice-oriented side pre- and early modern mathematical astronomy was computation ephemerides, that is, tables displayed daily positions planets in a synoptic calendrical format. Even though medieval Europe no exception this regard, existence ephemerides period region has gone largely unnoticed, owing both to terminological difficulties low survival rate actual specimens. What exists significant numbers, however, are texts describing different approaches constructing computing their various entries. The article demonstrates by discussing ten such dating from approximately middle 12th century just after 1300. Taken its entirety, hitherto neglected corpus provides conclusive evidence against view according which entered European astronomical practice only 15th century.
